SESRIC project on “Improving Tourism Ecosystem in OIC Countries” to be funded by COMCEC

Date : 19 February 2018 Venue : Ankara Türkiye

SESRIC project on “Improving Islamic Tourism Ecosystem in OIC Member Countries: Destination and Industry Development” has been selected for funding by The Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC), within the 2018 Implementation Period of COMCEC Project Funding.

The project is a continuation of “Development and Promotion of Muslim Friendly Tourism (MFT)” Project that was implemented by SESRIC in 2017 within the COMCEC Project Funding (CPF) scheme. Its aim is to increase the capacity of the relevant government officials from Tourism Ministries of the OIC countries through capacity development training, exchange of experience and know-how, through a 2-day training program that will identify a roadmap for Islamic Tourism Destination, by selecting a Turkish city as a case study.

The growth of the Muslim travellers is a new emerging segment within the travel sector, that is affecting the global tourism industry. The growth of this travel segment has given rise to a number of specific needs, such as halal food, prayer facilities, water usage friendly toilets, Ramadhan services and facilities, recreational facilities with privacy etc.

In response to this, the COMCEC Coordination Office (CCO) in Turkey introduced in 2013 the COMCEC Project Funding (CPF), a financing mechanism that funds projects submitted by the Member Countries and relevant OIC Institutions to realize the strategic objectives and outcomes of the COMCEC Strategy.

The funding is provided in a form of grant by the Turkish government through the Development Bank of Turkey, which is one of the main bodies in  the COMCEC Project Funding scheme.

Serveral SESRIC projects have been financed by this funding scheme since 2014.
