 For the first time in history, a majority of the human population lives in cities and towns. By 2050, 70% of the world’s population will be urban. Rapid urbanization has had a transformative impact on the organization of societies and is strongly associated with the decades-long economic expansion that has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. Studies shows that nearly half of the 30 fastest-urbanizing countries in the world are OIC Member States. Given the scale of challenges and opportunities related to urbanization and security in OIC Member States, SESRIC and United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT) has initiated the OIC Sustainable Urbanization Capacity Building Programme in 2014 in supporting country-to-country and city-to-city exchange, knowledge-sharing, and capacity development.
